The 21st October 2011 marked the Corporate Responsibility Day for Kuoni business units. Great activities were planned across the globe in a bid to uphold the Kuoni CR objectives.
In an endeavour to support environmental sustainability, this year, Private Safaris engaged in a tree planting exercise at Kenya’s Karura forest, a vital water catchment area. The forest sits on a 1063 hectares in urban forest. Previously, the forest suffered deforestation and was at the verge of allotment to Private Companies who intended to put up luxury buildings. Conservationists, including the late 2004 Nobel Peace Prize Winner, Wangari Maathai carried out extensive campaigns to save this unique forest.
Private Safaris team comprising of representatives from each department were accompanied by Mr. Thomas Iten, the Managing Director and Mr. Michael Njogu, the Head of Sales & Marketing and M.I.C.E to a tree planting session where over 200 trees were planted. Although this was a very tiring task everyone was enthusiastic. The initiative is a 3 year plan that will foresee maintenance of the trees planted.
Today the forest is regaining its glory through the support of friends of Karura forest and the Kenya Forest Service.

HISTORICAL MOMENT
Explore the simple old colonial farm house, one encompassed with rich history of Karen Blixen famous for the film Out of Africa, an Oscar winning film.
The house, now a museum belongs to a different time in Kenya's history. To date, the house still occupies the items that Karen Blixen chose and once enjoyed. The gardens are lush with several old coffee machines that have been lying untouched for decades.
The experience is incomplete without a visit to the Giraffe Centre that is in close proximity, where the highly endangered Rothschild giraffe live in peace. With an elevated viewing-cum-feeding platform, this tour is a wonderful daytime experience while at the city of Nairobi

STANDARD CHARTERED MARATHON 2011
The 9th edition of the Standard Chartered marathon in Kenya was held on 30th October 2011. The event that continues to attract large numbers was yet another success that drew great numbers across the nation. As has been the custom, the various categories included 42km race, 21km, 10km and 3km for the family race.
Private Safaris has over the years participated in this initiative. Over 40 members of staff some of whom were accompanied by their family members took part in the race. The challenge was evident especially for those who took the 10km run and above. Despite the challenge, many are committed to engage in this worthy cause that goes a long way in eradicating avoidable blindness in children under the age of nine years. All proceeds accumulated are channeled towards supporting “seeing is believing” projects across Kenya.
