Set in the heart of Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary, in the Mwaluganje Hills and
a 45 km drive from Mombasa, Kenya's seaport and Coast capital, the camp is set
along the shoulder of a low hill facing a traditional elephant trail, allowing
guests to watch the elephants from the comfort of their well-appointed tents.
The camp, with all the comforts one would expect from a four-star hotel, consists
of 20 twin-bedded tents (there is provision for an extra bed), each tent with
its private timber verandah, shower with hot and cold water, WC and wash-hand
basin. It is the only tented camp in this new sanctuary, and guests have the
entire 6000 acres to themselves. Being a private camp, it is secure and guests
may walk in the camp area and view wild animals in complete safety. The bird
life is prolific and amazingly varied and birdwatchers will find the camp area
and sanctuary full of interest. Mwaluganje is one of the two only places in
Kenya where you can see the rare and indigenous Sokoke Scops owl.
After a day full of activities, round of the day with a superbly-cooked meal
under the stars, with the background music the hoot of an owl, the yelp of a
jackal, the trumpeting of an elephant and occasionally the cough of a distant
leopard. The traditional African camp-fire is the highlight of the day, after
an enthralling game drive. Over a cocktail or cool drink it is a time to recall
the marvels of Africa's nature, and to wonder at the majesty and dignity of
the stars of the show-the elephants. Nowhere else on earth can offer such a
feeling of the unexplored, the wild untamed wilderness of the African bush,
yet with all the comforts of the modern world.
