Elsa's Kopje

The word kopje means small hill in Dutch. Elsa’s was named after the orphaned lioness Elsa, reared by Joy and George who eventually returned her to the wild in Meru. This inspired Joy to write the renowned book “Born Free” Elsa’s is located in Meru, one of the singled out driest parks. However, it is crisscrossed with numerous rivers and streams running off the nearby Nyambeni Mountains. The landscape is dense with Baobab trees, Doum and Raphia Palms vegetation running through the dry valleys. The animals are shy and undisturbed by human activities. Meru National parks enables variety of special activities in an almost private park such as Bush walks, night game drives, sundowners, hill top hiking, fishing, full day safari to the great Tana River Kenya’s largest flows along the southern boundary and a visit to local Tharaka tribal village. The architecture of the lodge is very African, the design elegant yet rustic. In effort to protect and regenerate indigenous trees to encourage wildlife in the lodge area no trees were destroyed. Instead these were incorporated into the overall design of the individual cottages. Has 9 romantic stone and thatch cottages crafted around the natural features of the Kopje.
